A GUNMAN tried to rob three orthodox Jews in separate incidents in Golders Green - but fled empty handed because they were not carrying cash on the Sabbath.

The man picked on his first victim at about 8pm last Friday between Highfield Road and Leeside Crescent.

The victim was walking through an alleyway when a man got out of a red car and pointed a black pistol at him demanding money.

But he explained he did not carry cash or anything else on the Sabbath.

The suspect searched his pockets before fleeing the scene.

About half an hour later the suspect tried again - this time pointing his pistol at another Orthodox Jew in Garrick Avenue - and again the victim explained that he didn't have anything to hand over.

Having still not learnt his lesson the robber tried at least once more five minutes later in Princes Park Avenue with the same result. Police also believe there may be other victims.

Detective Constable Hannah Rose said: "I would like to hear from anyone else who saw this man, or the car in which he was seen. So far the only description I have is a red car with a 'For Sale' sign in the window."

The suspect is a black man, in his late teens or early 20s, and about 5ft 6ins tall.
